How much should you spend for website design?

Constantine Yaremtso - Thursday, October 30, 2008

What is your website budget?

How much should you spend on website design?

In today’s economic situation, the first question customers ask when they call a web design company is how much the website is going to cost.  So let’s review how much website design should cost.

First of all, never, ever design the website yourself unless you are a professional in this field.  Think about it, let’s say you are an owner of a restaurant and you are an excellent cook. If the plumber comes to your home and says that there is a leak in one of the pipes, would you fix it yourself or hire the plumber?  Well, you can read a manual and try doing it yourself, but where is the guarantee that you will do it right? Where is the guarantee that you will not damage other pipes? Or if it leaks again tomorrow, will somebody fix it for you for free or will they charge you? How about the time you have to spend to learn?  Will fixing it yourself save you more money than you could have earned if you invested that time in your business instead? The same goes for your website design. Trust the professionals. They can guarantee you quality, cutting edge design, and customer support.

Secondly, shop around. Call a few companies, get proposals from them, and then compare. The price range will amaze you. It can go from $50/hr to over $250/hr. Yes, there are many amateurs, who can design a website for a $100, but the truth is,  you get what you pay for. Over the years we had worked with many companies whose  websites looked nice, but under the hood, the code was terrible. In order to add or change something, we had  to spend many hours and often  ended up rebuilding the website completely. The website is not like a toy that you buy, play with, and then throw away. You should be able to easily modify and update it, upload new pictures, create new pages, and write new content.

Here is a good example. Imagine that you are the owner of an auto-repair shop and a customer comes to you and asks you why the repairs cost so much and then proceeds to tell you that  it should cost half that amount. What would you say? At first, you would probably get a little upset, but then you would explain that you need to pay salary and  rent, you need to pay for your license fees and taxes, you need to buy parts, and so forth. And in the end you need to make some profit. We usually see the end-product and many times we underestimate the cost of making it. The same goes for a website. We think it's so easy, but we forget to count the hours that programmers and designers have to spend in the process. That does not mean you have spend $10,000 on a simple website. Many companies overprice their service because of their brand or popularity. The only one way to know how much to spend is to shop around and find a good deal for yourself. You can choose one company over another for many reasons – maybe because it's local, maybe because it has good customer service, maybe because of its reputation , or maybe because the PRICE doesn’t BITE.

What is the difference between custom website design and template-based website design?

Constantine Yaremtso - Monday, August 25, 2008
Custom website design is created by a web artist based on the customer guidelines, such as color and layout, amount of text on the page, the kinds of images, and more. Our team usually obtains these guidelines from the client and then creates two different demos based on them. The client then chooses one of them, making changes and adjustments as needed.  The client can always decide to use different elements from both designs to create a unique mix.
Template website design, on the other hand, is based on an already created template. The template can either be obtained free or purchased online from template vendors.  If you don’t like the colors or the layout, our team will work with you to find the perfect look.
Advantages and Disadvantages:
Custom website design is time-consuming. It takes time to come up with the right design and to find just the right look.  However, you will know for sure that no one else has a website that looks like yours.
Custom website design cost a lot more compared to the template-based web site design.  However, if done right, custom website design is very flexible and easy to modify so that you can add many different features.  That is not so easy to do with a template.
To create a quality custom website design, you will need to find a professional and experienced web design company that will be able to build a light, easy-to-understand CSS. That is because you will most likely want to make changes and additions to your website, so the design needs to be flexible.  While customers see only the front-end of the website, the developers see the back-end and it’s important that the design is clean and flexible. Many people can build a website, but very few can build it well. Our team uses only div tags instead of tables to make sure that the design is friendly and easy to modify.
Now you will ask, “What should I use?”  Well, just like we discussed above, both solutions have their pluses and minuses, and you need to consider your needs to decide what is best for you. If you need a nice, simple website that shows your services and what you do, but at the same time you have a small budget, go with a template-based web site design. If you want to have a great looking and unique website with many features, go with custom design. In any case, never be without web presence, because nowadays it is very important and more valuable than you can imagine. It will bring you many potential clients and people will see your business as far more professional, well-organized, and secure.

Content management system

Constantine Yaremtso - Tuesday, August 05, 2008

A content management system (CMS) is a software used to create, edit, manage, and publish content in a consistently organized fashion.

CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, versioning, and publishing industry-specific documentation such as news articles, operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, and marketing brochures. The content managed may include computer files, image media, audio files, video files, electronic documents, and Web content.

A CMS may support the following features:

  • identification of all key users and their content management roles;
  • the ability to assign roles and responsibilities to different content categories or types;
  • definition of workflow tasks for collaborative creation, often coupled with event messaging so that content managers are alerted to changes in content (For example, a content creator submits a story, which is published only after the copy editor revises it and the editor-in-chief approves it.);
  • the ability to track and manage multiple versions of a single instance of content;
  • the ability to publish the content to a repository to support access to the content (Increasingly, the repository is an inherent part of the system, and incorporates enterprise search and retrieval.);
  • separation of content's semantic layer from its layout (For example, the CMS may automatically set the color, fonts, or emphasis of text.).

Why should you have an online store?

Constantine Yaremtso - Friday, August 01, 2008
In today's technology-driven, information-saturated world, having a website or online store is no longer a luxury, but a sheer necessity. In order to position your business in the world-wide marketplace and reach your target markets, you need to be online.
Selling products and services online can have major advantages for businesses, leading to increased profitability and lower costs.

Selling online has a number of advantages over selling by conventional methods, including:

  • Making savings in set-up and operational costs. You don't need to pay shop assistants, rent high-street premises, or answer a lot of pre-sales queries.
  • Reducing order-processing costs - customer orders can automatically come straight into your orders database from the website.
  • Competing with larger businesses by being able to open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Being able to receive payment more quickly from online transactions.
  • Attracting customers who would not normally have investigated your type of high-street outlet.
  • Improving your offerings using the data gathered by tracking customer purchases.
  • Using your online shop as a catalog for existing customers.
  • Global marketplace - Your web site can be accessed from anywhere in the world, which now means you could sell to anyone ANYWHERE.
  • No middleman - By selling directly to the customers you can now cutout the middleman.
  • 24 Hour business - If your web site can process payment information you can now be open 24 hours a day!
  • Increased customer information - Instead of posting your latest brochure or clients account statement, why not allow them to access it via your web site?
Consumers in 2007 spent on average £4 Billion per month online, which is more than 50% above the 2006 amount!

The Internet can open up new avenues for your business to buy and sell products or services online, with such activities generically referred to as ecommerce.
